“Hootsuite For Bands” Makes Sharing Songs & Tracking Engagement Easy
Nowadays, in order for a band to survive, musicians really have to be skilled at marketing andsocial media, as well as the guitar, drums or uke (unless they’re super famous and they have “people” — “people” tend to do all that stuff for them). That means utilizing Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and all the other tools at their disposal to get their music out there.

Heeding the beat of music's digital revolution
Disc sales are plummeting because new media such as Internet radio are attracting millions of users. Listeners can stream music and videos from websites. Songwriters have to adjust by trying to produce catchy jingles that can be downloaded as ringtones.
While the restructuring dispute has to be sorted out by the songwriters and GMM Grammy, the episode shows the dire straits overtaking the entertainment industry, where marketing is as pivotal as the talent of the artists or the quality of their work.

Now, the transition to mobile music technology should make music more accessible to listeners, but music companies will have to find new approaches so they can still deliver quality products to consumers. Apple, not major music labels, defines how entertainment companies deliver their products. Even Playboy cannot resist the temptation to go iPad.

MTV plans online award show for digital music
MTV hopes the show will do for digital music what its Video Music Awards did for the music video.
Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music and Logo Group, calls the planned show "an interactive musical mess" to celebrate both "the cool and the geekdom."
"It will be sloppy," Toffler says. "It will be interactive. It will be customizable. It will be fun and unexpected. Most shows on television are about what's popular, and I think this will be about what's bubbling up."

Music Criticism in a Social Media World
This past December, the Village Voice awarded the title of Music Critic of the Year to@discographies, an anonymous Twitter account that sums up the music careers of an artist within Twitter’s 140 characters of less format. Some traditionalists balked, but the recognition is valid. @discographies manages to sum up in 140 characters of less what some music writers can’t manage in a book, while staying witty and opinionated.

SoundCloud brings new music sharing platform for amateur musicians
SoundCloud began in 2007 to allow amateur musicians to upload, share and comment on their music.
The site is currently estimated to have about a million users and recently raised about $10 million from Index Ventures and Union Square Ventures, according to All Things D.
SoundCloud, however, is expected to be what Flickr is to photographs and take MySpace's music section one step ahead. It allows users to upload their music with a special URL, and it can be publicized or shared via Facebook, Twitter or other social media.

Social media important to musicians
When the panel was asked what the perfect social media campaign would be, Henning Ahrens from Four Artists Booking stressed that the most important element was to create quality content that was interesting.
“If it’s not, nobody visits or follows you. You need five tools: Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Youtube and a website. We redirect people from Facebook to the website to buy tickets,” he said.

Common Social Media Mistakes Musicians Make
You do not exist if you are not on the Internet. No, you do not. It is very important that your band be on Twitter, a Facebook, MySpace - yes, still - and preferably have Bandcamp and ReverbNation pages, a Wikipedia entry, and official YouTube channel, and a regular old Web site.
